Q&A with Madeline Merlo

It seems to me that you can't really live in Maple Ridge (or the surrounding areas) without having at least the occasional run in with country music. Love it or hate it, it seems to be an inescapable part of our community (Roosters anyone?) but for the haters I challenge you to listen to Madeline Merlo's new song "Whatcha Wanna Do About It" and not be singing along by the end. And with the release of her new album, Free Soul, on Friday as well as a live performance for JRFM it seemed like the perfect time to do a little Q&A with the musician herself.

Q: How long have you lived in Maple Ridge?

A: I have lived in maple ridge for 20 years! Since I was 11 months old. Now I split my time between here, Toronto and Nashville.

Q: How did you come to the decision to pursue music as your career?

A: I have been singing and performing since I was 6 years old. I always remember loving it and knowing it was what I wanted to do with my life from a very young age. Sometimes I feel like it was chosen for me.

Q: What has been your favourite moment in music so far?

A: I have had many moments in my career so far that can only be described as magical. I have played for big crowds that have sung along to my music and won a Canadian Country Music Award. But nothing will compare to getting the opportunity to sing for our men and woman of the CA Armed Forces in Kuwait this past year. It was a life changing experience for me and it was an honour to perform for them.

Q: What does Maple Ridge, and the community mean to you?

A: Maple Ridge and my community mean so much. One of the most beautiful things about my journey was the overwhelming support of my little town and the people in it. They took my EP to number 2 on iTunes, requested my music on the radio and sold out every local show I've played. It's truly amazing to be surrounded by that, I'm very lucky.

Q: What does a career in music mean for you?

A: A career in music for me means a life spent making art and doing something that my soul has always ached to do. If I could fill my fridge one day writing and playing music I would be the happiest girl in the world. Music is very much my identity and alongside God and my faith, has given me purpose in my life.

Have I sparked your interest? Listen in to JRFM on Friday to hear more from Madeline and to hear her sing live and don't forget to pick up a copy of her new album!
